Citizenship based on birth or descent

In most circumstances, you do not need to submit a form to the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service if you are entitled to citizenship based on birth or descent, eg via an Irish relative.

However, you may need to submit a form to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, eg to add yourself to the foreign births register, to apply for a passport.

Contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for citizenship questions based on a connection to an Irish relative.

Check if you are entitled to citizenship before you make contact.

Note: This information is for guidance only. Read the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Acts to check your eligibility for citizenship.
