Permission to work as a doctor

Apply for permission to work as a doctor via the schemes or programmes described below. You must be registered with the Medical Council of Ireland.

Employed by a hospital

Locum (6 months or less)

Apply via the Atypical Working Scheme for permission to work.

Do not apply via this scheme if your work lasts 14 days or less, but you must be registered with the Medical Council of Ireland.

Full time (more than 3 months)

Apply for an Employment Permit for permission to work.

Employment Permits are issued by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation (DBEI), not by the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS).

Employed in Primary Care (General Practice)

Locum (3 months or less)

Apply via the Atypical Working Scheme for permission to work.

Do not apply via this scheme if your work lasts 14 days or less, but you must be registered with the Medical Council of Ireland.
