The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D., on behalf of the Government, today congratulated two members of An Garda Síochána who played a key role in thwarting a suspected kidnap attempt in Galway.
The attempted abduction of a prominent County Galway businessman was foiled on Sunday night after the prompt intervention of two Gardaí. Minister Ahern, during an operational briefing at today’s Government meeting, informed his Cabinet colleagues about the Galway kidnap attempt. The Minister, on behalf of the Government, has written to Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy praising the Gardaí for their valour.
Minister Ahern said: "The two unarmed members of the force responded to a callout to the home of the businessman, unsure precisely the nature of the threat facing them. The Gardaí, thanks to their professionalism but above all bravery, tackled the intruders despite being both outnumbered and facing armed individuals who posed a serious threat to their safety and that of the occupants of the house."
"On behalf of the Government, but indeed the public at large, I want to thank both Gardaí – and their colleagues who also responded to the callout – for their dedication and devotion to duty. Like other members of the Gardaí over the years, their actions on Sunday night highlighted how well served as a community we are by An Garda Síochána."
