The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Brian Lenihan T.D., today announced that the Government has appointed Noirin O’Sullivan to the post of Assistant Commissioner in An Garda Síochána with effect from 31st July 2007.
Making the announcement Minister Lenihan said "This appointment is a significant achievement for Assistant Commissioner O’Sullivan as she is the second female to have achieved the senior rank of Assistant Commissioner. I congratulate her on her achievement and wish her well in her new post".
Assistant Commissioner O’Sullivan will take over in the Western Region from Assistant Commissioner Gerry Kelly who is retiring from An Garda Síochána at the end of this month. The Minister said: "I would like to take this opportunity to wish Assistant Commissioner Kelly well on his retirement and to thank him for his commitment and outstanding contribution to An Garda Síochána".

A native of Co Dublin, Noirin O’Sullivan has served with An Garda Síochána since 1981 in various postings around Dublin and in Tipperary. Her postings in Dublin included the Central Detective Unit (Drugs) Harcourt Square and the Garda National Drugs Unit. Since 2003 following her promotion to the rank of Chief Superintendent, she has served in Garda Headquarters in the Human Resource area and more recently in the Garda Technical Bureau.
