The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr Michael McDowell TD, announced that he has made the Garda Síochána (Reserve Members) Regulations 2006. These regulations provide for the recruitment, training and appointment of reserve members to assist the Garda Síochána in performing its functions.
The making of the regulations allows the Garda Síochána to commence the recruitment of reserve members of the Force. The recruitment of reserve members is being undertaken as part of the forthcoming recruitment campaign which will also seek applications for full-time Garda trainees. The recruitment campaign will commence on Monday 14 August and details will be available in the press and on radio and on the Garda website www.garda.ie
Making the announcement Minister McDowell said, "The Garda Reserve is an exciting and important development in policing in Ireland and will be a valuable support for the Garda Síochána. It will enhance its capacity to respond to emerging policing challenges and will allow for more Gardaí to be visibly deployed in communities.
Reserve members will provide support to full-time members and will help strengthen links between the force and local communities throughout the country.
I would urge anyone who would like to play a part in this new area and era of policing to apply in the forthcoming recruitment campaign."
